Ehram weaving is one of the most deep rooted handcrafts mostly in the Eastern Anatolian Regions like Erzurum, Erzincan, Bayburt and Artvin. Ehram is the name of women’s outerwear made of finely spun sheep’s wool, which is obtained by weaving with a flat surface shuttle through very laborious stages. Ehram has been used since the 1850s in its current form.
Ehram is an outerwear cloth thats also assigns the marital status of the women. Off white wool is used by brides, because the white sheep is a more common type. Darker wool is used for married women with kids. The dark brown is used by widows. Women used to cover their head with the Ehram, while mens are around.
For ehram, wool sheared in the seventh months of the sheep is used. And no sheep is harmed during the process. The people of the region believe that the strands of this wool are long and will not shrink in the rain. Generally, natural colors of wool such as brown, dark brown and off white are used in ehram. It is widely used in summer and winter. Due to its natural wool, it provides the advantage of heating, especially in winter, as well as covering.
